What is palliative care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care focused on providing relief from symptoms and stress of serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and family. It is provided alongside curative treatments at any stage of illness.

Is palliative care the same as hospice?

No. Palliative care is available at any stage of illness and can be provided alongside curative treatments. Hospice is a specific type of end-of-life care. You can receive palliative care for years while continuing active treatment.

Do you offer telehealth palliative care visits?

Yes. Telehealth visits are available for eligible patients located in Georgia. You will need a device with a camera and internet connection. A telehealth link is sent on the day of your appointment.

Do I need a referral to see Supportive Medicine Specialists?

Yes, a referral from your healthcare provider is required. Providers can submit referrals through the Piedmont Healthcare EPIC system (Department: AFF-SMS) or by fax to 404-883-3609.

Can I receive palliative care while still receiving treatment?

Yes. Palliative care works alongside curative or disease-directed treatments. You do not have to stop chemotherapy, surgery, or other treatments to receive palliative care.

What conditions does Supportive Medicine Specialists support?
